You Don’t Have to Leave LAUSD β€” There Are 333+ Programs
Before pursuing an inter-district transfer to SMMUSD or CCUSD, understand what LAUSD offers: 333+ magnet programs, 150 SAS (gifted) sites, dual language programs in 20+ languages, affiliated charter schools, Zones of Choice, and early/middle colleges. The LAUSD system is vast, and the right program for your child may already exist within it. This playbook shows you how to find it.

SMMUSD Has Frozen Most Inter-District Permit Categories
If you are an LAUSD family hoping to permit into SMMUSD, be aware that SMMUSD has frozen all interdistrict permit categories except: SMMUSD Employee, Sibling, City of SM Employee, City of Malibu Employee, and SMC Employee. If you don’t qualify under one of these five categories, explore CCUSD, charter schools, or LAUSD magnet/SAS programs instead.

Zones of Choice: Open Through September 30, 2026
The Zones of Choice application for both 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years remains open through September 30, 2026. This is a separate pathway from magnets β€” it allows families to apply to schools within designated geographic clusters. Check choices.lausd.net for zone maps and availability.

What Most Parents Don’t Know About LAUSD

333 magnets, 150 gifted sites, and a system designed to be navigated
Scout Take

Every year, thousands of Westside parents assume that LAUSD equals their neighborhood school, and that the only way to access a better option is to transfer out to SMMUSD or CCUSD. This is wrong. LAUSD operates 333+ magnet programs, 150 Schools for Advanced Studies sites for gifted learners, dual language programs in 20+ languages, Zones of Choice, affiliated charter schools, and early/middle colleges. The system is overwhelming by design β€” LAUSD is the second-largest school district in the country, serving 420,000+ students across 710 square miles. But for parents who learn to navigate it, the options within LAUSD can be as strong as (or stronger than) what you would access through an inter-district transfer. This playbook is your tactical guide to every LAUSD school choice pathway β€” the one the $500 consultant charges to explain over a phone call.

The Resident School Rule β€” Check This First

If your child lives within the boundaries of a designated SAS school AND meets the eligibility criteria, the school MUST place your child in the SAS program (unless you opt out). This means if your neighborhood school happens to be an SAS site, your gifted child gets automatic access without applying through Choices. Check whether your neighborhood school is an SAS site before applying elsewhere. You may already have access to exactly what you need.
